Tips for Exploring Lombok’s Countryside (From One Traveler to Another)

17 Jul 2025

If you’re planning to visit Lombok, don’t just stop at the beaches (even though they’re amazing). Trust me, the real magic happens when you head inland to the villages. I spent some time in Loyok, Tetebatu, and the smaller countryside spots, and it honestly felt like stepping into a different rhythm of life. Here are a few tips I wish someone told me before I went:

1. Slow down, don’t rush.
The best part about the countryside is the vibe. People aren’t in a hurry, and you shouldn’t be either. Walk through rice fields, sit with farmers, join a craft workshop… the moments feel more special when you give yourself time.

2. Learn a little Bahasa Indonesia.
Even just “Terima kasih” (thank you) or “Apa kabar?” (how are you?) goes a long way. The locals appreciate the effort, and you’ll get way more smiles. Plus, it makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a guest.

3. Stay in a homestay instead of a hotel.
I stayed at Peraja Bungalow in Loyok, and it changed my whole experience. You get local food, family vibes, and stories that no guidebook could ever tell. It’s budget-friendly too, which is a win-win.

4. Be ready for simple comforts.
This isn’t luxury travel. it’s authentic travel. Sometimes the shower is cold, sometimes the Wi-Fi is spotty, but honestly… that’s the charm. Bring what you need (like a power bank, comfy sandals, and maybe mosquito repellent), and just embrace the simplicity.

5. Support the local economy.
Buy that handwoven scarf in Pringgasela, try the bamboo crafts in Loyok, or take a cooking class. Your money goes directly to the families, and you’re helping keep traditions alive.

6. Respect the culture.
The villages are proud of their traditions. Dress modestly, ask before taking photos, and be mindful in temples or family homes. A little respect goes a long way, and you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

7. Bring an open heart.
It sounds cheesy, but it’s true. The countryside isn’t about ticking off “things to see”. it’s about the people you meet and the stories you share. That’s what makes Lombok unforgettable.
